Why a Doula?

Research has shown that mothers and babies are benefitted by continuous support in labour. Among the benefits are an increased likelihood of spontaneous vaginal delivery, shorter labours, fewer interventions, decreased likelihood of pain medications, and increased satisfaction with the childbearing experience. A recent Cochrane analysis of twenty one randomized controlled trials affirmed these results. The authors stated that “continuous support from a person who is present solely to provide support, is not a member of the woman’s social network, is experienced in providing labour support, and has at least a modest amount of training, appears to be most beneficial.”
